A day late but equally diverse, this week’s Essential Listening features a mixture of indie rock, psychedelic folk and quirky punk. Check it out:

City Reign – Daybreak

Daybreak is the new single from Manchester based indie band City Reign. The track mixes a lo-fi guitar sound with clear produced vocals, creating a sound somewhere between Japandroids and early Bloc Party; it’s defiantly a track worth giving a few listens to. The single is released on May 9th via their own record label, Car Boot Records.

The Douglas Firs – I Will Kill Again

I Will Kill Again is the opening track from Scottish act The Douglas Firs forthcoming album Happy As A Windless Flag. The track is a borderline psychedelic, borderline ambient and just about fitting into the indie folk genre – the band has created a very unique sound. Along with traditional folk instruments they include an overall ambient sound throughout the track, as well as a lovely mix of male and female lead vocals. The album, Happy As A Windless Flag is out May 16th.

&U&I – Stalk This City

The fantastic &U&I have unleashed THEIR new single Stalk This City. Continuing their great sound of odd time signatures and sudden change of tempos, this track makes you want to shout along straight away to the lyrics – WITH a thunderous bass line.  You can download Stalk This City for free now, and keep an eye out for their debut album later this year.
